Denny Hamlin is out for six weeks to heal

There is a lot to say about Sunday's race in Fontana, California. What happened at the end of the Auto Club 400 was wild and crazy. The final lap was a good, clean fight for the lead between Joey Logano, and Denny Hamlin - - and then-- no one who was watching TV saw Kyle Busch coming from behind to steal the lead from both Hamlin and Logano. At that point, Logano lost control of his No. 22 Ford, cut Hamlin off, hit the wall and Hamlin's No. 11 FedEx Toyota went flying down the bank and nose dived into the wall.

We now know that Hamlin got his self out of the car, and laid his self down on the ground. He knew he was hurt when he heard his back pop, and wanted to lay straight- to keep his back straight. To hear Hamlin's first interview, after his release from the hospital, with Jeff Gluck and Lee Spencer, check out the Fox Sports Video page.

Fortunately, it was an injury, and although it will take a long time to heal, this could have been worse.

Joe Gibbs released a statement tonight on Hamlin's future:

"Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin was evaluated today by Dr. Jerry Petty of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates after suffering an L1 Compression Fracture during an accident on the final lap of Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway.

Dr. Petty determined that Hamlin will not require surgery, but will need time to properly heal, which is estimated around six weeks time. Dr. Petty will make the determination when Hamlin will be able to return to racing this season.

No decision has been made on a replacement driver for Hamlin during his absence from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series."

I  am not ashamed to admit that I am praying for a speedy recovery for Hamlin. This is a painful time for him, and  it is more important that he takes the six weeks off now, and take care of his self now,  so that he can safely return to racing, and to enjoy a few more years of racing.
